Literacy Pedagogy and Practice: Facilitator Program

Gain the skills, knowledge, and dispositions needed to facilitate Literacy Pedagogy and Practice.

This program will support you to:

• deepen your knowledge of the English 2.0 curriculum (F-10), effective literacy practices, and relevant Department of Education (DE) frameworks
• build the capability of teachers and leaders to embed the VTLM 2.0 and DE initiatives
• improve student learning outcomes across Victoria by advancing effective teaching practice.

The program will develop participants’ knowledge and skills of:  

• Victoria’s approach to the teaching of reading
• the use of systematic synthetic phonics  
• structured literacy approaches
• the ‘Big 6’
• other content explicitly covered in the Literacy Pedagogy and Practice program. 

New facilitators are required to complete the Academy Facilitator Program prior to undertaking this professional learning.

The program is delivered by Academy Principals in Residence and other Academy staff who have significant subject-specific and wider leadership experience.  

Roles

Designed for primary and secondary educators with experience in leading improved literacy practice and outcomes. This includes:  

• principals
• assistant principals
• leading teachers
• learning specialists
• Professional Learning Community leaders
• literacy and/or other curriculum leaders.  

Regional improvement staff, including Education Improvement Leaders, Professional Learning Community managers, and student achievement managers are also encouraged to apply.

School sectors

This program is available to the following school sectors:  

• Victorian Government  
• Catholic  
• independent.

Delivery

Over 6-8 months, participants will engage in and contribute to:

• 3 workshop days (approximately 18 hours), focused on content and pedagogical knowledge, and the leadership skills and dispositions required to facilitate Literacy Pedagogy and Practice
• self-paced learning, planning, optional forums
• end of year facilitator symposium. 

Facilitators are expected to deliver at least one intake of the Literacy Pedagogy and Practice program in the year of completion.

Learning outcomes

You will gain the knowledge and understanding to facilitate Literacy Pedagogy and Practice, and:

• influence explicit, high impact literacy teaching
• reflect on existing instructional practices for literacy
• develop and implement instructional plans that improve teaching and enhance student learning and achievement
• structure rigorous inquiry into content, design, and impact within different contexts.

You will also:

• build strong connections within a network of education professionals to learn, discuss, and collaborate to implement literacy improvement approaches
• develop your facilitation skills
• refine your leadership skills and grow your status as an expert in your area
• support your career development
• make a systemic impact and improve learning outcomes in literacy.

Completion requirements

To successfully complete this program and receive a certificate of completion, you need to: 

• attend and participate in all workshops  
• complete all required pre- and post-workshop activities 
• facilitate one intake of Literacy Pedagogy and Practice.

We significantly subsidise costs for all participants.
