Workshop abstracts

Workshop 1: Building relational trust

Facilitators: Sarah Dalton and Ryan Oliver, Academy Principals in Residence

Explore the importance of relational trust in effective middle leadership and school improvement. This session will focus on the practical ways middle leaders build trust through consistent actions, clear communication, and authentic collaboration, whilst deepening knowledge of the four key components of relational trust.

Workshop 2

Participants can choose one of 3 workshops to attend.

Nice isn't enough: the relational work of leading others

Facilitator: Associate Professor Kylie Lipscombe, University of Wollongong

Middle leadership is often described as relational but rarely is that work made explicit, named, or practised with precision. This workshop challenges the assumption that strong relationships alone are enough.

Building on the keynote, this session goes inside the real work of leading peers: navigating resistance, holding professional conversations, influencing without authority, and staying relational under pressure. It surfaces the often-unspoken tensions middle leaders experience and positions relational practice as deliberate, disciplined, and developable, not intuitive or incidental.

Participants will work with concrete practices, interrogate familiar scenarios, and test new ways of leading in relationally complex situations. The session is designed to unsettle as much as it supports, equipping participants with sharper strategies and a clearer understanding of what effective relational leadership actually demands. Participants will leave with practical tools, provocations to carry forward, and a resource pack to support continued application in their context.

The power of observable models to support teaching expertise development

Facilitator: Dr Ryan Dunn, University of Melbourne

Grounded in contemporary research on human behaviour change and instructional improvement, this workshop will explore the critical role observable models of exemplary practice play in supporting the development and consistent implementation of effective teaching strategies across teams.

Participants will examine the importance of middle leaders clearly aligning instructional solutions to identified challenges and consider how precise, evidence-informed approaches can strengthen teaching practice and improve learner outcomes. The workshop will emphasise the relationship between leading with influence and the need to define instructional techniques in ways that are specific, concrete, and actionable, enabling educators to translate theory into practice with clarity and confidence.

A key focus of the session will be the power of observable models of exemplary practice in supporting rigorous implementation and scaling effective approaches across teams and schools. Participants will explore how modelling, shared understanding, and visibility of practice can contribute to greater consistency, professional growth, and collective efficacy within schools and organisations.
