VTLM 2.0 for Teachers and Leaders

Our tailored half-day VTLM 2.0 workshops support teachers and leaders to implement the latest evidence-informed teaching practices aligned to the Department of Education’s Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0).

You will develop a clear, practical understanding of the essential elements of the VTLM 2.0, significantly strengthening your teaching practice and ensuring you are equipped to successfully implement the VTLM 2.0 across your classroom and school.

Teachers

• Understand how students learn. Develop a deeper understanding of student learning by unpacking the VTLM 2.0 elements of learning, based on cognitive science and education psychology.  
• Apply evidence-informed teaching practices. Examine teaching practices that manage cognitive load, enact explicit and responsive teaching, and provide retrieval practices leading to mastery. 

Leaders

• Enable highly effective teaching. Lead consistent, evidence‑informed teaching practices by building systems that grow teacher expertise.  
• Lead and sustain school-wide improvement. Strengthen the conditions that directly improve student learning outcomes by examining the essential levers to drive school improvement. 

Dr Nathaniel Swain

Dr Nathaniel Swain is a teacher, instructional coach, and writer. He produces a blog for teachers called Dr Swain’s Cognitorium and is co-host of the Chalk Dust Podcast with Rebecca Birch. Nathaniel works directly with schools and systems and through an online learning platform called Luminary.

Having worked at universities and government school systems in Victoria, Australia, Nathaniel has taught a range of learners in schools and tertiary settings. Dr Swain founded a community of teachers committed to the Science of Learning: THINK FORWARD EDUCATORS, now 30,000 members and growing. Dr Swain is a sought-after speaker on educational circuits, and has a best-selling book entitled ‘Harnessing the Science of Learning: Success stories to help kickstart your school improvement’.

Roles

Workshop 1 is designed for:

Workshop 2 is designed for:

• Principals
• Assistant principals
• Middle leaders.

School leaders can register for both workshops.

This program aligns with the Department of Education's VTLM 2.0, including planning, enabling learning, explicit teaching, and supported application strategies.

Delivery

Choose the workshop or workshops that align with your role.

Workshop 1: Teacher workshop

This 3.5 hour onsite workshop will strengthen your understanding of the VTLM 2.0, including elements of learning and evidence-informed teaching practices aligned to how students learn.

Workshop 2: Leader workshop

This 3.5 hour onsite workshop will focus on evidence-informed teaching practices and how to implement the VTLM 2.0 across your school.

Learning outcomes

In the Teacher workshop, you will:

• strengthen your understanding of VTLM 2.0 elements of learning and how students learn, based on cognitive science and education psychology
• examine the importance of student attention, focus and regulation, including optimising classroom routines and environments
• examine evidence-informed teaching practices that manage cognitive load, enact explicit and responsive teaching, and provide retrieval practices leading to mastery.

In the Leader workshop, you will strengthen understanding of leading and sustaining whole-school improvement by:

• examining mechanisms to optimise professional learning and coaching to increase teacher expertise
• facilitating effective teaching in your school — moving between learning consolidation and application and developing whole-school knowledge-rich curricula
• exploring the optimal conditions required to ensure high impact instruction is evident and embedded across a school
• using case study analysis from Victorian schools.

We significantly subsidise costs for all participants.

Financial support

Victorian Government school participants may be eligible for additional subsidies. 

A small school CRT subsidy is available for Victorian Government school participants that come from schools that have less than 100 students and covers the costs of employing a Casual Relief Teacher (CRT).
