New to teaching
Overview
Our New to Teaching program provides professional learning, mentoring and support to new teachers, those undertaking their formal teaching qualifications, or those returning to school after a significant time of leave.
Learn alongside other teachers at a similar career stage, and expand your network and community of practice by building meaningful relationships.
Participants will also learn:
- how to create supportive and safe learning environment for all students
- elements of teaching and learning from the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0)
- how to apply professional ethics and responsibilities in practice and the role of professional learning in broadening teachers’ professional capability.
This program is facilitated by 2 Academy centre managers with 60 years of senior teaching and school leadership experience, including assistant principal and principal roles. Together with Department of Education staff and guest facilitators, they specialise in:
- teaching and learning
- wellbeing
- behaviour management
- Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration process.
It is also directly aligned to the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Professional Standards for Teachers (Proficient level) and the VIT Provisional to Full Registration process.
Audience
Roles
- Bendigo: graduate teachers in their first 1-2 years of teaching, permission to teach participants and teachers returning after a significant time of leave.
- Shepparton / Wodonga: permission to teach participants who are still completing their formal qualifications, and teachers returning after a significant time of leave. Permission to teach participants must be approved by the VIT.

Bronwyn is a substantive assistant principal at Bendigo Senior Secondary College and has been a teacher and educational leader for 30 years. Bronwyn embodies a commitment to leading with integrity and genuine empathy and brings a growth mindset to her work.
Simone Higgins
Manager, Shepparton Academy CentreFacilitator: Shepparton / Wodonga program
Simone was the principal of Grahamvale Primary School for 7 years and has almost 30 years of broader education experience. She is passionate about teachers and leaders coming together to collaborate and build their knowledge and capacity.
Structure of program
Bendigo
Participants will engage in and contribute to:
- 5 workshops: 3 half-day and 2 full-day workshops
- pre-work activities (4 hours)
- the development and presentation of their learning journey that aligns with the VIT full registration process.
Shepparton / Wodonga
Permission to teach participants will engage in and contribute to:
- 2 full-day workshops
Learning outcomes
Participants will:
- explore the role of professional learning in broadening teachers’ professional capability and practice.
- explore how to create and maintain a supportive and safe learning environment for all students, while also promoting their wellbeing and the wellbeing of teachers.
- learn the elements of teaching and learning from the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0) and strategies for effective planning and implementation.
- build strong relationships and a community of practice with other teachers at a similar career stage.
- apply professional ethics and responsibilities in practice, ensuring compliance with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements.
Attendance requirements
Bendigo
To receive a certificate of completion for this course, you are required to:
- attend and participate in at least 70% of program topics (equivalent to 2.5 days)
- undertake pre-workshop preparation and follow-up activities
- present your ‘Learning Showcase’.
Shepparton / Wodonga
To receive a certificate of completion for this course, permission to teach participants are required to:
- attend and participate in 2 full-day workshops

We significantly subsidise costs for all participants.
