Our Influence: Emerging Assistant Principals professional learning program is designed to help aspiring and new assistant principals build the core competencies required for success. Influence offers a unique opportunity to identify areas for growth, expand your professional networks and directly address critical skill gaps as you undertake a school-embedded strategic inquiry focus.
You will build and refine key leadership capabilities, including:
- evidence-based strategic and systems leadership
- people leadership that successfully develops staff capability
- authentic community and stakeholder engagement that drives student wellbeing and achievement.
How Influence: Emerging Assistant Principals is structured to support you
The program is structured around dynamic workshops, enabling you to:
- engage in a school-embedded strategic inquiry focus and receive constructive feedback from experienced facilitators, concentrating on the leadership dispositions and readiness for the assistant principal role
- learn through authentic case studies and real-world problems of practice
- network with a range of peers, establishing valuable connections for regional and rural leading teachers, teaching specialists and newly appointed assistant principals.

Facilitator
Designed and delivered in collaboration with an expert facilitator.
Structure of program
Over 6 months, you will engage in and contribute to:
Workshops
Engage in face-to-face workshops in Melbourne or at an Academy regional centre to explore different aspects of leadership presented through content tailored to the unique challenges faced by education leaders.
Through expert-led sessions you’ll connect with like-minded professionals and collaboratively tackle real-life leadership challenges, gaining valuable perspectives and support.
Peer learning groups
Collaborate with your peers online to enhance your knowledge and develop your critical thinking while building professional connections.
Self-directed learning
You will have direct access to the Academy’s online learning platform, featuring curated books, articles, theories and best-practice resources to help you deepen your understanding of leadership.
You will also undertake a strategic workplace improvement project to address an opportunity within your school context and receive feedback from your peers and expert facilitators.
Learning outcomes
You will develop the knowledge and skills to:
- understand leadership practices that support a component of, or a whole school initiative, aligned to the school’s strategic direction
- understand whole school and broader education initiatives and directions, and how to effectively communicate these
- understand emotional intelligence and its impact on leadership
- lead highly effective teams and effectively manage challenges within and across teams
- provide frank and fearless advice
- support others to use data to enhance and monitor improvements in student outcomes
- mentor others, including emerging leaders, to build their capacity in teaching, learning and wellbeing
- develop strategic leadership practices, including an understanding of change management that support school improvement
- work with the broader community, including parents, partners, providers and the Department of Education.
Completion requirements
To successfully complete this program and receive a certificate of completion you need to:
- attend and participate in all workshops
- complete all required pre- and post-workshop activities
Fees and financial support
We significantly subsidise costs for all participants.

Additional financial support for government schools
Victorian government school participants may be eligible for additional subsidies.
A small school CRT subsidy is available for Victorian government school participants that come from schools that have less than 100 students and covers the costs of employing a Casual Relief Teacher (CRT).
