Fostering Culturally Inclusive Schools with Pearl Subban
Overview
Students who feel seen and understood by their teachers and peers are more likely to develop a sense of belonging at school and engage more deeply with learning.
In this workshop, you will deepen your understanding and working knowledge of cultural awareness and explore practical strategies to create culturally responsive and inclusive learning environments. With a focus on the Outer Gippsland area, you will develop your understanding of cultural responsiveness and its connection to equity, engagement and student learning. The session introduces classroom approaches that support students from culturally diverse backgrounds, while encouraging critical reflection on curriculum silences and systemic barriers that can affect inclusion.
What you’ll learn
- Build cultural awareness and responsiveness. Equip your teaching with the latest practices in cultural awareness to lead lessons where every student feels safe, supported and included.
- Foster inclusive and culturally safe learning environments. Critically examine curriculum silences, identifying gaps to understand how poor cultural inclusivity impacts student belonging.
- Apply learning to your local settings. Work with practical strategies which can be aligned to your local contexts to identify potential improvement areas in your specific school settings.
