A 1 day workshop build the confidence and subject knowledge of out-of-field secondary maths teachers.

Teachers are some of the most adaptable in the Victorian workforce with many secondary educators teaching subjects outside their expertise. 

Facilitated by the Mathematics Association of Victoria (MAV), ‘Teaching Maths out-of-field’ is a 1 day workshop designed to support secondary teachers who may be new to teaching mathematics or wanting to broaden their teaching capabilities.

Participants will work on growing their subject content knowledge and developing effective approaches to maths education.  

During the workshop, participants will learn about the resources available to support them in planning and learning, and focus on evidence-backed pedagogy for optimal learning outcomes. 

Audience

Designed for teachers and teacher leaders in Victorian government secondary schools.  

Facilitator

Danijela Draskovic is a Secondary Mathematics Education Consultant at the Mathematical Association of Victoria.  

Founder of the Victorian Coding Challenge (VCC), Danijela runs the VCE Revision Program, leads the Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) and is an active contributor to the Professional Learning offered by MAV. 

This 1 day workshop (approximately 7 hours) is held onsite at the Academy’s centre in Bairnsdale and will focus on identifying the misconceptions in mathematical content areas.

Participants will work with teachers to build their content knowledge and their confidence to teach maths at a secondary level.

During the workshop, participants will learn about the resources available to support them in planning and learning, and focus on evidence-backed pedagogy for optimal learning outcomes.

Participants will gain knowledge and understanding of:  

  • the common misconceptions in mathematical content areas 
  • the resources available to support planning and learning 
  • where to turn when they need support.  

Participants will develop skills in:  

  • mathematical content knowledge  
  • numeracy content knowledge  
  • confidence to teach maths at a secondary level. 

Fully subsidised by the Department of Education for Victorian government school participants.
